Country music's living legend, and oft-monikored "King of Country", is riding the wave of his almost 40 year career. George Strait is one of the most successful singer/songwriters in music history. With 60 number one hits - more than any other artist in any genre - and over 70 million albums sold in the U.S. alone, Strait has shattered music records in multiple categories, and is firmly cemented in country music history.
Born in Poteet, Texas in 1952, Strait began playing in a rock and roll garage band in high school. His country music influence came from seeing live bands at local and regional events, eventually forming his preference for country over rock and roll. After a brief stint in the army, Strait enrolled at Southwest Texas State University where he joined a band called Stoney Ridge and quickly became the lead singer. The band was renamed Ace in the Hole (his backup and tour band to this day) and continued to play local bars and honky-tonks until a bar owner with connections to Music Row convinced executives to come listen to the band. They were signed to MCA Records. Strait has remained with the MCA label for his 39 studio albums, throughout his entire career.
George Strait's legendary career has earned him countless awards including 22 Country Music Awards (CMA), two as Entertainer of the Year consecutively in 1989 and 1990, and he holds the career record for the most CMA nominations. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Academy of Country Music Awards named him "Artist of the Decade" for the 2000s. Strait has acted in several movies, most notably "Pure Country" in 1992.
His music is considered "neotraditional country", taking the slow strains and melodic sounds of Hank Williams and George Jones and infusing them with upbeat rock tempos. His simple lyrics are catchy and personal.and his concerts are a down-to-earth good time...it's him, his guitar, and his astonishing repetoire of hits entertaining a stadium full of adoring fans. In September 2012, Strait announced he would retire from touring after his "Cowboy Rides Away" tour that wrapped its second leg in mid-2014, but signed on to record five more albums.
