Canadian singer/songwriter Michael Buble's career track could have been a very different one...in his youth he desperately wanted to be a professional hockey player. He has stated that, "...if I was any good at hockey, I probably wouldn't be singing right now." But fans of Buble from around the world, who thrill to his songs, concerts, and movie and tv appearances, rejoice that he wasn't a good hockey player. Thanks to the support of his italian grandfather, Demetrio Santaga, who paid for his singing lessons and traded plumbing services in return for stage time, Buble began his singing career by performing in nightclubs. He also trained vocally with the opera baritone, Joseph Shore. Buble never had formal music training in terms of reading and writing music, but instead used his emotions to steer his songwriting.
After working for several years taking every gig he could find, from singing telegrams to cruise ships, his big break came in 2000. Buble was invited to sing at former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's daughter's wedding, where he met music producer David Foster (Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand). Foster eventually agreed to produce an album for Buble, Michael Buble, released in February 2003. The album was marginally successful in the U.S., but Buble began making tv appearances in the states, acted in a few movies and recorded soundtracks for movies such as Down With Love and Spiderman 2. Buble went on to record five more studio albums and three live albums, five of which have reached #1, consecutively, in the U.S. His latest, To Be Loved, was released in April 2013. Buble has sold 30 million albums worldwide...and counting!
Buble's music is fundamentally jazz, but his talent lies in his ability to create songs that fit pop, R&B, and even country with a jazzy feel. His sound is multi-generational, appealing to lovers of the big-band era, jazz, doo-wop and current pop. His concerts are laid-back fun, with performances that make the crowd feel as if he's having a conversation with them (which he frequently does!)
